    formation as an artist began in the workshop of José Antonio Grana and later in that of José Bardasano; When he felt that he could no longer teach him. Schmill devoted himself to learning alone, free from all authority, through the contemplation of the paintings of John Singer Sargent, Abram Arkhipov, James Whistler, and Max Liebermann. In 1964 he was awarded a grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
    His work has been exhibited in important venues such as the Antonio Souza Gallery, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, the HR Giger Museum, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Weyhe Gallery in New York, Galería Misrachi and the Mexican Institute of Culture in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, it is part of the permanent collection of institutions such as the MoMa in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in San Luis, Missouri, Texas University, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
    The first auction result ever registered for an artwork by artist José Manuel Schmill, is a painting sold in 1999, at Louis C. Morton, and the most recent auction result is a painting sold in 2021
    The artistic milieu considers josé Manuel Schmill as one of the most radical painters in Mexico, an insatiable observer whose work arouses contradictory emotions due to his fondness for horror in painting, music, literature, and cinema. His training as a painter began in the workshop of José Antonio Grana and with the Spanish José Bardasano. Later, he dedicated himself to learning in a self-taught way, free from all authority, through the contemplation of the paintings of John Singer Sargent, Abram Arkhipov, James Whistler, and Max Liebermann.
