    ITEM DESCRIPTION
    Item Description
Up for your consideration is a very fine original painting by Georges Rouault in 1926. The miniature painting is one of 26 different paintings created by Rouault, which were commissioned by Ambroise Vollard (his agent), to complete a series interpreting Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du Mal." Although the proposed portfolio was never published, a few plates were completed (including this piece) and made into etchings. This was is titled "Satan II." The set was framed. and exhibited at the prestigious Hammer Galleries (NY) in 1960 and 1961. Included is the auction brochure.
The painting is a touche (heavy black ink) on Chinese white. It measures 3.25" x 2.5", and the original 1960's exhibition frame is 12.75" x 14.75." It was painted on a thick, hand-wove paper, which was folded over a piece of cardboard. It is unsigned, as were all of the pieces in this series. This is a one-of-a-kind Rouault painting, that was subsequently made into an etching. The piece is in excellent condition.
    Provenance
Originally commissioned by Ambroise Vollard (Rouault's gallerist)  in 1926, as an interpretation of Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du Mal." Rouault completed 31 of these original miniature paintings, but only a few were actually made into etching plates. This was one of them. The entire collection was kept intact by Vollard, and bequeathed to his brother Lucien who sold them to Mr David Borowitz. The collection was then exhibited at Hammer Galleries (NYC) in 1960, and then displayed at Main Street Gallery (Chicago). During these exhibitions, the paintings were sold and distributed to to their respective buyers in 1961.
This piece was acquired by a prominent Chicagoan Lee Winfield Roberts (43rd ward precinct captain) directly from Main Street Gallery. Included is the original letter of sale from the gallery, signed by the owner Joseph W. Faulkner on original letterhead. The piece also bears an estate ink stamp on the back by Mr. Roberts. The piece comes directly from the Robert's estate, from his children, with the original Hammer & Main Street Gallery exhibition brochures, and the letter of sale.
